DIY Felt Squirrel

Check the bottom of your Three Trees bottle, and you’ll see a little squirrel. Now you can make your own felt version of our friendly mascot! This DIY project would make an adorable gift for any squirrel lover, or you can craft it as a toy for little ones.

Skill level: Beginner-intermediate

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Embroidery needle

Materials

  • Felt (shown below, two 9x12” sheets)
  • Tan thread (or in a color matching the felt)
  • Black embroidery thread
  • Stuffing
  • Rice or lentils (for stuffing)

Crafting tips: For the stuffing, you can use cotton balls. When choosing felt, pick a different color for the tummy section, or make a monochrome squirrel. Brown, tan, and red felt work well. This pattern uses a whip stitch. For further guidance on sewing, click here.

How to Make a Felt Squirrel

Download and print the pattern, and cut out the individual pieces.
Trace the pieces on the felt with a marker. Trace the body twice: once with the striped side up, and once with the stripes down.
Cut out the felt pieces, trimming within the marker lines.
Use the black embroidery thread to sew eyes on the two main body sections. Buttons can also be used for eyes.
Sew the pieces together and stuff as you go. Extra guidance: Join the tail pieces, stopping at the base at the point indicated with a tick mark on the pattern. Stuff as you go, but don’t overpack. Attach the top piece (ears and nose) to each of the sides of the main body, one at a time, ensuring that the side marked “nose” on the pattern is sewn to the nose of the body. Leave a gap on one side, from under the arm to the foot, for stuffing.
Sew on a nose using the black embroidery thread.
Stuff the head and torso, leaving about a 1/2 inch of space at the bottom. Fill the 1/2 space with rice or lentils. The weight will help the squirrel sit upright.
Sew the gap shut.
